Different Ways of Breathing
Are you aware that a simple but temporary change in our breathing pattern can release anxiety, relax jumbled thoughts, and refocus us if our emotions are overtaking us?
More On our October 1st Discussion
Our October 1st monthly newsletter, Subtle Energy Alchemy’s Energy Sharing, reminded us that our physical body is the container holding our most powerful part of being human: our energy life force.
Without this life force energy system, there would be no life. It’s that simple.
Our October 1 newsletter also reminded us of the many terms by which that life force is called, including authentic self and soul connection.
Our ongoing connection with this life force depends in part on our thought tendencies and how we process emotions.
Thought tendencies: Do they tend toward positive or the heavier energy of negativity? As an old expression reminds us: We can see life as a glass half full (positive) or the glass being half empty (more negative).
The more positively oriented we remain, the easier it is to “hear” what our authentic self is whispering to us. We remain connected to our inner self
But it’s not always easy to remain positive, is it. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us which blocks our clear connection to our inner guidepost.
Tip For Releasing Emotions
First check with your medical specialists to ensure these tips are both safe and appropriate based on your physical condition.
Shaking It Out Approach: This release includes both a fast physical movement with strong exhale, plus visualization.
This approach is best done standing up, leaving a few inches between your feet so you feel physically balanced
Keep eyes open
Allow your body to be comfortably loose with your arms hanging at your sides
Inhale while slightly raising yourself off the heals of your feet.
Quickly, with some force, bring both heals back onto the floor while:
bending your knees slightly to absorb the force, and
exhaling fast through opened mouth while shaking your hands outward from the wrists
Visualize your emotions shaking out from your hands
Repeat until you feel relaxed
This is also effective if your morning coffee, tea, or juice is not having its typical waking-you-up impact.
Tip For Quieting Thoughts
This exercise is often a preparatory step for meditation, but it is effective as a stand alone method for quickly shifting the direction of your thoughts.
If you have difficulty going to sleep, this will also relax your body.
This can be done standing, sitting or lying down.
If in a safe environment in which to close your eyes, do so.
Take a slow deep inhale and exhale fast and hard out opened mouth, releasing your tension
Repeat up to a total of three times.
Other Breathing Approaches
Also, you might want to explore other types of breathwork, such as:
Box breathing: Inhale for X counts, hold breath for X counts, then exhale for X counts
This is favored by some meditation teachers to help quiet the mind, but I personally feel that the counts keep the left brain active. It is best for meditation to quiet the logical left brain and let the quieter right brain take the lead.
Stomach breathing: Our typical way of automatic breathing is inhale, expanding the chest with our exhale relaxing the chest. Stomach breathing extends our stomach on inhale, relaxing on exhale. This is favored in some movement exercises such as taichi.
Cultivation and Circulation: My focus is usually on strengthening our energy core and circulating it throughout our body. With this focus, we breathe outward through the nose so no energy is released. It remains in our body and auric field (biofield) to continue growing stronger and smoother. There are other ways of releasing tension in this approach, such as out the bottom of our feet or working with white light which will be in a future Blog
As you can see above, breathwork is a powerful tool but the style of breathing is best matched with your end goal.
