Timely Words
This month we reach back in time and share a portion of our October, 2015 newsletter, originally entitled: GHOSTS, GOBLINS AND MASKS – OH MY!
It shares a gentle reminder there are different kinds of personal masks. There are the fun holiday ones but also those we may not realize are worn more frequently than once a year.
Different Masks
Halloween has evolved into a day for all ages. Whether child or adult, many of us enjoy becoming whatever we want by donning masks and costumes. No need to divulge who we really are until we remove them. But is the holiday mask the only one we wear?
It’s easy to start believing in the ‘us’ we think other people want or expect to see. If this leads to reactions, attention, or validation we seek from those in our daily life, it becomes a challenge to stop this type of acting other than who we are. We engage a mask of pretending.
If we feel uncomfortable in our own skin, as the expression goes, it is possible we are pretending in at least a portion of our life.
And that discomfort? Yes, it becomes increasingly complicated to maintain while continuing to drain our energy system.
Pause
It helps to pause, take a few deep breaths, and ask ourselves if we were being truthful in our interaction.
Are we comfortable with it? If not, how could it have unfolded differently? There is no need to think in terms of “right or wrong” or placing blame.
Begin with small steps in simple situations. Be honest with ourselves in this. The more we connect with ourself, the more comfortable we are being open with others.
